Perspective Art

Perspective Art

This course is designed to introduce, simplify and demystify the basics of spatial perspective and linear perspective including 1, 2, & 3 point perspective and how to apply this theory to drawing, painting and graphic arts. The student will learn to make their art compositions more technically accurate and pleasing to the eye whether they are working from reality or their imagination. Fun exercises will be incorporated throughout the course that will be appealing to a range of artistic ability from beginner to advanced and subject matter interest including buildings, landscapes, science fiction, vehicles, cartooning and story-telling. Story Art

Story Art

This art class encourages and guides you to create a visual art piece depicting a meaningful event from your life experience or a fictional story from your imagination. The task posed to you is to think about what would make a dynamic book cover. You will learn how to jump start your imagination, nurture an idea, gather reference material and organize ideas and concepts. We will delve into the use of metaphor, symbolism and realism to convey your concept. Composition, color, freehand sketching and use of models and photography will be covered. The student will have the choice of medium they will use to create their final art piece from drawing to sculpture. What is your Story? Instructor: James Stilwell

Creative Fiction Writing

Creative Fiction Writing

This is a creative writing workshop class for writers of all levels who are interested in fiction writing–from writing a fictional novel to poetry writing to the short story and flash fiction. The workshop format means that your work and development as a writer will be at the center of this class. Students will become familiar with fiction writing through critically reading writers from various genres of fiction, as well as lively in-class discussions. Teachings and exercises on the elements of fiction writing, such as character, structure, narrative voice, plot, and theme, will be explored each week. Writing prompts for generating new story ideas and honing craft will be given at the start of every class. Each student will multiple opportunities to draft and revise pieces that will be constructively discussed in class. Students will also submit weekly constructive critiques of their peers’ work and will be expected to come to class prepared to discuss one another’s work in detail. Students will also gain knowledge of the process of being published from developing pitches to writing query letters to agents, editors, and publishers. Instructor: Kerry Garvin

Let’s unleash and nurture your creative side together. Learn to visually interpret what you see and capture this on paper. We will cover basic drawing fundamentals: line, contour, shapes, shading, controlling tones, proportion, perspective and composition. While using pencil or graphite stick a variety of subject matter including still life, nature, people and buildings will be explored. Creative Nonfiction Writing

Creative Nonfiction Writing

This is a creative writing workshop course for writers who are interested creative nonfiction writing in the literary forms of memoir, travel writing, the personal essay, and narrative poetry. Students will become familiar with craft elements such as voice, structure, audience, as well as how to pitch projects to literary agents, editors, and publishers. Students are encouraged to experiment with narrative styles outside of their custom, and to use humor and other techniques to hook readers. The workshop format means that your work and development as a writer will be at the center of this class. We will read literature by some of the best-known authors of the past century, as well as by some of the most accomplished writers at work today, to inspire and challenge us. But the bulk of the class will be spent developing, discussing and improving your own original work, providing constructive criticism to your peers, and engaging in lively discussion during writers’ workshops. Painting is lots of fun and using acrylic paint is one of the best ways to introduce you to creating colorful art. We are going to demystify color theory by exploring the elements of color and how colors relate to each other. You will discover how to limit your color palette with amazing results. The subject matter will be up to you, be it still life, nature, or landscape. Materials cost not included in course cost. Students must provide their own materials. Instructor: James Stilwell
