Beginning Jewelry Fabrication

In this 10-week course students will acquire working knowledge of jewelry and fabrication skills. Students will design and fabricate pieces in the studio and examine contemporary trends in jewelry and metalsmithing.The course will cover techniques commonly used in jewelry and metalsmithing, sawing, piercing, soldering, basic stone setting, forming, and finishing are explored through the creation of individual projects. Instructor: Greta Lutman

Basic Blacksmithing

Forging Jewelry

FORGING JEWELRY

Students will use iron and traditional forging techniques to create one or more pieces of jewelry. This course is great for beginners to gain familiarity with the basics of jewelry making at the forge. Instructor: Matthew Shirey. Class meets on Friday.

Chef Knife

April 26

CHEF KNIFE

This 3-day class requires students to have general knife grinding knowledge prior to this class. Students will be instructed on how to construct a full tang chef knife, including handle material selection, pin stock, adhesives, and overall finish techniques. Materials and supplies will be provided to make a finished chef knife. Instructor: Ken Hall. Class meets Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

ABS Handles and Guards

ABS Handles and Guards

This class is designed to continue the course of study set forth in the ABS Introduction to Bladesmithing course. This class includes detailed information on creating handles, both full tang and hidden tang, guards, butt caps, decorative file work, spiral dagger handles, handle material choices, guard material choices, pin stock, adhesives and overall finish. Students will be instructed on how to finish off a professional looking knife. Participants are expected to possess the skill and knowledge to forge, grind and heat treat blades prior to this class. A limited amount and type of materials will be provided, students are welcome to furnish and bring their own handle and guard material. It is required that students enrolling in this workshop provide their own, finished blades ready to be completed. This is a week-long class and will be taught by an ABS Certified Master Bladesmith. Students need to bring their own safety equipment for the classes:

Eye protection

Leather chaps

Gloves – 2 sets: one for hot material and a pair of regular leather gloves for protection.

Beginning Jewelry Fabrication 2

Beginning Jewelry Fabrication 2

No prerequisite

Tuesday Nights, 6-9 pm

This 10-week course is a continuation of Beginning Jewelry Fabrication 1. Students will continue to work in two-dimensional construction and will also design and fabricate pieces focused on soldering jump rings and butt joints. In order to master these types of soldering processes, students will design and make a chain necklace with a thoughtfully designed clasp or fastener, and will fabricate a piece of jewelry using the Marriage of Metals technique. If there is time, students can also work on a set of stacking rings or a band ring. We will continue to learn the basics of sawing, sanding, filing, and constructing findings as needed for the pieces we fabricate. Students will finish at least two projects including a handmade chain and a Marriage of Metals project. Instructor: Greta Lutman

Intermediate Jewelry

Intermediate Jewelry Fabrication: Focus on Findings

Prerequisite Beginning Jewelry Fabrication 1 or 2

Wednesday Nights, 6-9 pm

In this 10-week class, we will research, design and fabricate various pieces of jewelry that require the construction of findings, that is, the hardware that is used to secure pieces together and onto the body. In particular, we will tackle some common pieces of jewelry that require specific types of findings such as hoop earrings, a brooch with a pin back, and a hinged piece of the student’s choice. The successful construction of elegant, simple and ingenious findings can elevate a maker’s metalwork projects to a new level; from casual to craft. Instructor: Greta Lutman

Leather Sheath

LEATHER SHEATH

This 2-day class will instruct students on how to make a leather sheath for a medium sized fixed blade knife. The class will cover the following topics: leather selection, making a pattern, cutting leather, basic tooling, dying and hand stitching. The objective of the class is for each student to complete a sheath for one of their knives. Students must bring a completed knife to make a sheath for. Instructor: Ken Hall.
