Professional Crafts Jewelry and Metals
Class of 2008
Adjunct blacksmithing instructor Haywood Community College, member of Southern Highlands Craft Guild, owner of S Metal Designs.
Shelby Mihalevich graduated from the Haywood Community College Professional Crafts Jewelry and Metals program in 2008. He first discovered the program while visiting the Folk Arts Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway while on a family vacation. During their stop at the Folk Center, Shelby viewed the annual HCC Professional Crafts senior exhibition and was impressed with the works of craft. This experience stuck with him and he applied for the jewelry program as a high school senior. As the HCC Professional Craft programs are sought after, Shelby was added to the wait list and studied graphic design for two years in the interim. Upon entering the jewelry program in 2006 he focused on fundamental techniques such as fabrication and construction, since this would be the building blocks of all his future work. While in the program he began taking blacksmithing and bladesmithing with David Burnette as an elective. These classes opened a whole new area of work for Shelby who enjoys incorporating texture and pattern into his work. Areas of Damascus steel and bladesmithing have become a specialty for the artist. Shelby was accepted into the Southern Highlands Craft Guild in 2012 for both jewelry and mixed media, which includes his knife work. He currently sells his work through his website www.smetaldesigns.com and the Southern Highland Craft Galleries.
